At the moment, the way I see it I can either run manyfold completely unauthenticated, meaning everybody and their mother can download AND UPLOAD anything to their heart's desire, OR authenticated, at which point you are required to have an account to even see models.
Describe the solution you'd like
I'd like to have a "visibility: public" option, either as default or as per-model individual selection, that allows me to make models publicly available (like e.g. they are on thingiverse) without granting write access to everybody. This is especially interesting in conjunction with federation, as I don't want to require visitors from mastodon to authenticate just do download a model I have provided on my manyfold instance and federated into the fediverse.
Describe alternatives you've considered
I don't see any viable alternative to this suggestion that would yield the same result.

We have that! If you're in multiuser mode, on individual models, creators, or collections, in the sharing section of the edit page, you can give the public role visiblity. The UI isn't super obvious right now, that definitely needs improving, but the functionality is there. I publish a bunch of my own stuff on https://manyfold.floppy.org.uk without login required. I'll change the title of this issue to "improve UI for making models public" to reflect what still needs doing, if you don't mind?

changed the title
Allow unauthenticated read access on multiuser installations
Improve UI for making models etc public

oof ok found it after clicking around a bit ("role::public" as a suggestion after clicking on the usergroup twice). Yes I agree, this can be MASSIVELY improved. Still, I concur that this topic is then about improving the usability of that feature, not the lack thereof 👍 :-D
