Let's apply our understanding of mapping physical spaces #91 for a practical application in the city. We will chose a site where a physical map can help empower users of a space to navigate through it confidently.

Task 1: Mapping movement

Choose a site location which serves as a crossroads for a large number of travelers in the city. Survey the space and map out the flow of people through this location.

  • Time: 1 day
  • Format: A2 paper

Task 2: Information signage prototype

Based on the flow maps and the site survey, design a an information signage as defined in the Harmonised Guidelines for Universal Accessibility 2021 - Govt Of India at suitable locations.

Sec 5.2.3.2 Information Sign pg 263
Information signs help in orientation in a built environment by indicating specific locations in an environment.
This includes “You are Here” labels along with other building identification signs such as zone identification in public buildings or transportation hubs
Harmonised Guidelines for Universal Accessibility 2021 - Govt Of India

  • Time: 3 hrs
  • Format: 3x3ft digital tiff
  • Follow applicable standards and best practices for signages

Task 3: Public installation and user testing

Print and mount the information sign at the selected locations for public view in the city. Evaluate the effectiveness of the installed signage on the Orientation and Route decision parameters. Prepare your own methodology to measure this and take 10 reading to establish a baseline score for the signage.

    Image
  • Everyone was assigned one location to observe movement by following pedestrian flow from that location
  • Observation captured:
    • Source location: Metro exit no. / Bus stop no.
    • Source mode: Metro/Bus/Walk
    • Destination location
    • Destination mode:
    • Person required any help along the way?
