problem executing in container

I'm getting an exec format error when running yq on a minimal container image:

root@1d7bcbad5d0a:/project# yq --help
root@1d7bcbad5d0a:/project# echo $?
0

root@1d7bcbad5d0a:/project# strace yq

I'm building from this container which uses Debian

looks like I need to follow redirects better
