Is there any reason not to default to a secure connection?

I like the idea. Reasons I could think of why not would be SSL handshake over mobile sucks, and I'm not sure that every IRC server implements secure connections by default (if you operate an IRC server, do you have to sign your own cert?). I don't really know the lay of the land to always default to this.

I'd suggest focusing on the Mozilla and Freenode IRC servers, for starters.
