[Feature] Bootable ISO #134
Comments
If we can easily and automatically build an up-to-date ISO with all required dependencies in a github action, then I can definitely see the benefit of having this as a nice bonus installation option. Although if it requires a lot of maintenance to keep it updated and working, then I'm not so sure if it would be worthwhile. I like where the project is right now in terms of maintainability, it basically just works unless gentoo decides to do some major changes in their releases (which they didn't very often so far). I'd like to avoid a scenario where the automatically generated ISOs randomly stop working as that would make for a pretty bad user experience. Do you by chance have any experience with building installer ISOs? |
I used to build quite a lot of custom ISOs Maintainability shouldn't be an issue. It's pretty much just a one-time setup thing unless there are breaking changes on this project's end. I don't have any github actions experience, but I could easily get it to run on my gitlab instance. |
What base distribution would you use? |
probably arch or gentoo |
Well, I don't think it will change much. Today, it's still easy to install Gentoo just download the Arch ISO and clone this repo on Arch. Also, I'm too lazy to create a new issue, so I'm writing it here. I have an idea to make this installer support Raspberry Pi as well. Even though I started working on it about a year ago, I gave up. It's very easy for me to do, but I don't have experience with TUI dialogs. I hope that @oddlama will create the dialogs for it. #80 The installation is so simple that it boils down to downloading the stage 3, formatting the disk, and downloading the firmware: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi/Quick_Install_Guide. |
I think it would be awesome to have a bootable ISO for this installer
any thoughts?
