This is an issue flagged by Sara E - she notes that emacs looks like it is supposed to work in the desktop environment, but it hangs when she tries to actually use it.
I find that if I open a 'terminal' container in the desktop, when I type emacs at the prompt, the container does just hang. Presumably if emacs weren't installed, it would come back with an error message about the command not being recognized, so I assume this is an error with it being installed but not working properly??

More one this.. The hang is intermittent. Often running the command again EMACS opens. emacs -nw to get a non-window version works. @helenkirk have you tried openning emacs a second time after the first fail (sometimes need to CTRL-z to stop the first one and then type emacs again).
