Getting specific parameters from error messages

Is there a way to get specific details, such as parameters, from the API?

This is primarily an issue for XML messages where we are struggling to pull out the parameterised values, e.g.
XML 4: Not a valid XML document. Validation exception at line and column : XMLException message.
So getting , and message in a more structured way.

But it would be good to have more documentation on which parts of the messages we can get from the API.
