npm ci slow (hangs)

I've not seen anything online about this, but orbstack seems conspicuously slow when doing npm ci in one of our projects (uses pnpm in everything else and that seems fine).

In docker, it's slow (npm is slow) but on a totally clean run will be like 2-3 minutes worst case.

Orbstack it can take well over 15 minutes and maybe not even finish.

Sometimes, after it's going for a while (no network activity or cpu usage really going on machine either) I stop and restart it, and then it going in like 15 seconds.

The base is node:21.7.3-bookworm-slim but it's been present for a while.

I feel like when I first started with orbstack it wasn't so bad, but I don't have a good timeframe on when this started to be noticed, but I'd guess around the start of February, in the event that helps identify a regression.

Is there other info I could provide for helping identify the issue?

I haven't done deep analysis of the packages contained to see if its one in particular that is causing the issue, but it doesn't error or show anything of concern, doesn't seem to be doing any work, and isn't using the network.

Tried running npm ci in the base image with a small project and there is no issue at all. Can you provide a sanitized package.json file with the issue?

I having a similar issue. apt install has become very slow recently.

Base image: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
The container is using a bridge network

Can you share a screen recording of the installation, plus a diagnostic report from Help > Upload Diagnostics?

Deleting the relevant docker images fixed the issue.

To follow up, I was having the issue for quite a while before this, but it seemed to get "better" for a while. Like, not hanging, but taking like 6 minutes most of the time.

Then I got the project upgraded to PNPM and now it's always like 20 seconds, so...

Just use pnpm :)
