Trouble connecting to Debian VM from JetBrains PyCharm

Describe the bug

I'm trying to set up a remote interpreter from JetBrains PyCharm and can't work out the precise combination of details to get it to connect to a specific Orbstack VM.

To Reproduce

1. In PyCharm go to "Add New Interpreter" and select the "On SSH" option.
2. Select "New" and then I've tried different combinations of values for Host, Port and Username. The documentation at https://docs.orbstack.dev/machines/ssh says to use "localhost", "32222" and "default".

Expected behavior

The values specified in the documentation allow me to connect, but only to the "default" vm and not as my VM user so I don't have permissions to connect to the already existing virtualenv.

I've tried using other combinations of credentials, such as replacing "default" with my user but that doesn't connect to the server.

What do you mean by "VM user"?

Username format:

• default machine, default user: default
• default machine, specific user: root
• specific machine, specific user: root@default

I'm using my Mac OS user name "andy47" as that's the user name I have when I shell into the VM.
I've tried andy47@orb or andy47@<vm name> as the user but both give an error when PyCharm tries to introspect the vm and find Python executables.

I get this error when trying to select a virtualenv
