MirrorMaker2 and cleanup.policy

I'm using kafka.strimzi.io/v1beta2 KafkaMirrorMaker2 to migrate records from cluster source to cluster target for some topics.
source cluster's topic t has cleanup policy set on compact but the target cluster's topic t has a cleanup policy of delete.
I want mirror maker to copy the message for topic t from source cluster to target cluster but not the cleanup policy.
For context, what I'm doing is:

• source cluster in an in house kafka whose topic's t cleanup policy is set to compact
• I create the target cluster with the topic's t cleanup policy set to delete
• I deploy kafka mirror maker to migrate topic t from source to target
• I clean target' cluster's topic t using kafka-delete-records --bootstrap-server <target's bootstrap server> --offset-json-file delete_records_config.json where the file offset-json-file delete_records_config.json sets the topic's t partition's offset to -1
• when mirror maker copies the topic's t again from source to target, topic's t cleanup policy on target is set to compact

In both source and target cluster the auto.create.topics.enable property is set to false
