Keyboard shortcuts don't work well outside of "screen"

While most of the keyboard shortcuts work fine inside of screen, when running in a 'normal' terminal there are some issues. For example, any Alt-based shortcut (when using 'Esc') requires a very short delay between the initial 'Esc' and the key (much shorter than under screen).
