Is there a way to disable the auto appended digit if it is a duplicate?

I guess I'm not really looking for a unique URL title, but rather just a url_title-ish text without the number appended. I think I can figure out how to modify the field type so it doesn't append a digit, but was just curious if you had any better methods to disable the number appended to a url_title.
