Hook system halp?

Hello all,

I've submitted #13149, and I'm thinking about fixing it myself. However, on a brief look at the code, the hook system seems rather confusing. I'm also unsure of why pytest_deselected is failing when other hooks of the same class are working fine.

Where is a good entrypoint to grok hooks?
