Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
Sox is troublesome to build on some distributions, particularly with opus support.

Describe the solution you'd like
Remove dependency on sox by switching to ffmpeg (more widely used).

Describe alternatives you've considered
I don't think there are any solutions that are as well supported as ffmpeg.
