It might not work with FreeType. Harfbuzz supports it internally.

With it, we can use the Noto fonts from Google, which have good multilingual support.

Don't spend too much time with this vis-a-vis FreeType until it is certain that Harfbuzz is a no-go.

Using Noto OTF with a japanese text having an english prelude does display the prelude. Points to "yes".

save the test as a repeatable one that can be referenced later.
we should have a specific japanese release BTW.
find a japanese reader to help test.
