Are the three touch buttons independent or recognized as one?

I'm just curious whether the three touch buttons are independent or if they are acting as one?

Since the first update on v2 it was said the buttons are independent and they're planning to leverage them to allow for different applications to be used:

With there being more than one button, we plan to leverage multiple gesture for different applications. For example, FIDO2 can require a touch on any button to approve a request (like normal). But by pressing two buttons at once (giving the key a light “squeeze”), this could emit a static password or OTP.

At least hardware-wise, they have to be separate for this to be possible. The only question is how the firmware will use them :)
