Several different versions of webpack are required as peerDependencies and it all goes awry. After over an hour of debugging, I realized yarn install works perfectly from the start tho so that might be useful for someone.

I can confirm this is still a problem, and yarn install indeed does the trick. Thank you for the workaround.
It would be great if this could be fixed (or the doc changed to give yarn commands).
