Some special characters are rendered incorrectly, e.g. "Can't You Hear the Song?" [1]

May I suggest using Twitter's official JavaScript text processing library, twitter/twitter-text-js? PR to follow.

It was even simpler than that: by default, Markdown escapes variables.
