Convert Section 4 test from a manual test into a proper unit test

The readme says: "## Section 4: Java client unit tests", and a few lines later: "NOTE: this is not a unit test, it depends on the server to make any sense." [that you need to run manually]

Change the test in a way that it ensures its own dependencies are met.
