Switch to typescript

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
Developing without type annotations is really annoying, and makes it much more likely for bugs to slip through. Typescript would also make it possible to compile for additional targets.

Describe the solution you'd like
Add type annotations and TS only features incrementally & gradually. We can use an action to compile to a distributable JS program, if needed.
