Add tests

📚 Meta Issue

Currently, we have no tests. Our CI just checks that the code builds and links properly, but doesn't test any of the code itself. We need thorough tests of our codebase.

This is an open-ended meta-issue. I'd like to leave it open and update it to track new issues until we have a decent coverage of our current codebase.

Feel free to comment below or open additional issues with tests that we should implement. I will update this meta-issue to track these tests.
