I work for the Belgian distribution platform avilafilm.be and we get a lot of complains of collaborating producers and directors as well of clients about the style of the subtitles in the Vimeo player.
Currently subtitles on Vimeo (OTT) look like this (still 1) this makes the subtitles of Vimeo stand out agains those standart in the industry and on common steaming platforms like Netflix, Mubi,… cinema releases and players like VLC. (still 2). As you notice the problem is not so much the font but mainly the grey box around the subtitles. It would be very good (and simple) to create the possibility of turning this grey box on and off (on site level, not in the player itself).
Other VOD platforms, producers and directors solve this aesthetic problem by burning the subtitles into the images. If you operate mainly on the American market where everything is in English (like The Criterion Channel) this is a good workaround. If you, like us, need to be able to offer multi languages subtitles this isn't an option.
