It would be great to have this in IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition.

Unfortunately, CLion has no Community Edition and is pretty expensive for hobbyist.

I realize that this would not result in a similar experience as in Clion but it may still be much better than Arduino IDE (which is simply awful)

Arduino IDE is simply so unpleasant that sometimes, I edit / review my Arduino sketches in IntelliJ IDEA and only upload / debug from Arduino IDE.
