I tried several methods of darkening windows in ~100 spaces. Two work well: double blind and panel.
Plans and instructions follow.

Notes on others I tried—foil, velcro, roller blind—are below. Their descriptions, instructions, and drawings are archived in the [zip file](/darkroom-retreat.zip).
Notes to others I tried—foil, velcro, roller blind—are below, with a link.

If your room's air supply comes through your window, attach a helix vent to the back of the blind. If the recess doesn't allow this, attach the vent to the front. Test position of vent before cutting a slot for it to make sure it clears the window frame and handles. The slot jig usually works. See [helix vent parts](/air#helix).

A good building for the long-term is round or has five or more walls in a regular polygon. Walls can be rectangles. Right angles where floors meet walls are fine. But not where walls meet ceilings or each other, as in orthogonal floor plans.

Happily, a handful of elegant, cheap, quick, [round shelter designs](/other/links) exist for new buildings. My hygienic house [plan](/plan) below, is also one.
Happily, a handful of elegant, cheap, quick, [round shelter designs](/other/links) exist for new buildings. They include my hygienic house, below.

It turns out that rectilinear construction is not simpler or easier. It's just a frame of mind.

Now, let's learn to make our prison cells into escape vehicles. The next chapter, design, gives detailed instructions and plans for your very own darkroom.

Fun for kids and grown-ups alike

The above designs are all **shell** constructions. That is, they are frameless. Why? It is true architecture: the technique of forming arches from separate pieces of materials to create covered space.
