Why Photoshop?

Photoshop was originally created as a photo editing program, hence the name.

It is not free and is, in fact, quite expensive. However, it has been/was the best of its kind for so long that it's an industry standard of sorts. There are open source alternatives, but if you're going to work with designers you've got to know Photoshop.

Raster vs. Vector

Raster:

Dot-based

Dots = pixels (sometimes)

Cannot resize without quality loss

GIF, JPG, PNG

Photoshop

Vector:

Math-based (!)

Uses geometry to create graphics (!)

Infinitely resize while maintaining quality

SVG

Illustrator

Vector graphics can be infinitely resized (using appropriate programs, of course) without losing image quality/ sharpness.

Raster graphics get pixelated when you zoom in on them.

Photoshop was co-opted for web use to create precise mockups of websites in part because it's a raster graphics program, which translates nicely to the web's pixels. When we set the program to use pixels as the units, it's set up to be equivalent to the way we use sizing on the web.
