Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

Example use-cases for this include:

  • select a range of days to capture the rising part of a supernova light curve.
  • select a potential transit in exoplanet data.

Describe the solution you'd like

A tool that allows a range to be selected from the x-axis of the scatter plot viewer. Ranges can be selected with either:

  • touch and swipe gestures.
  • a pointing device.
  • the keyboard.

Still to do:

  • support feedback for the data selection task.
  • add the selection task to the project builder.

Closing this in favour of #5297 now that 2D data selection is available in the project builder.
