Tips for using census data from last year's Code Across America can be found at https://www.census.gov/developers/NDoCH_Support_Slides.pdf Codes for each available datapoint are defined here: https://ask.census.gov/faq.php?id=5000&faqId=1687
A substantial amount of the data that we want to use from the American Community Study is available at Census Block Group level which is one step higher resolution than the Census Tract.
This document shows the various data available and if you scroll to Appendix E at the end there the fourth column has a Yes if the data is available at the Block Group Level. This data is from the ACS Summary file that is available via FTP I am not sure how this changes with using the Census API.
