Blog README

This is the code for building my blog: http://www.marinamurashev.com/

To get it up and running on your own:

  1. install Vagrant: http://www.vagrantup.com/
  2. install VirtualBox: https://www.virtualbox.org/
  3. clone this repository and cd into the repository's directory
  4. install the vagrant librarian puppet plugin: vagrant plugin install vagrant-librarian-puppet
  5. make the modules path: mkdir modules
  6. install the box: vagrant up
  7. Once the box is finished installing, run: vagrant ssh
  8. This will take you inside the box. From there, you'll want to go to the app's directory: cd /vagrant
  9. Run the migrations: rake db:migrate
  10. Start the rails server rails s and go to localhost:3000 on your local machine.
  11. Create a user directly through your database (this isn't done through a UI because only the person that creates the blogs will need to log in):
  12. rails c
  13. User.create(email: '[email protected]', password: 'password123')
  14. exit
  15. In your browser, go to http://localhost:3000/users/sign_in and sign in using the same credentials you just set up.
  16. Either click on 'Create New Post' or go to http://localhost:3000/posts/new to create a new post. The post should be in Markdown format.

If you would like to use it for your own website, please make the following changes

  • Either delete, or modify to be specific to your needs, the google site verification code. It is located in the app/views/layouts/_google_site_verification.html.erb
    • If you're deleting it, remember to also delete the reference to it at app/views/layouts/application.html.erb. Delete the line <%= render "layouts/google_site_verification" %>
  • Either delete, or modify to be specific to your needs, the google analytics code. It is located in the app/assets/javascripts/google_analytics.js
  • Update the About Me page to be relevant to you. Its location: app/views/pages/about.html.erb
  • Update the default url in production to your own. Change the line config.action_mailer.default_url_options = { host: 'www.marinamurashev.com' } in config/environments/production.rb
  • Update the host in the sitemap view. Update the line <% host = "http://www.marinamurashev.com" %> in app/views/sitemaps/index.xml.erb.
  • I have the website send Contact emails using Sendgrid, with the application deployed to Heroku. If your setup is different, you'll have to update the config/environments/production.rb for the following setting: config.action_mailer.smtp_settings
  • Change the MAIL_TO_ADDRESS constant in app/models/contact_form.rb to use your own.
  • If you would like to continue using Disqus for post comments, go to app/views/posts/_comments.html.haml and replace your own Disqus shortname where it says 'marinamurashev'. Otherwise, delete that file, and the reference to it in app/views/posts/show.html.haml
