okay I guess 草=>grass=>^^ (I made that up) in japanese but yea lol as a chinese person seeing this, that was my first reaction

Context matters. The context here is anime. I wasn't saying Chinese version. 笑 is laughter/lol in Japanese. This is warau. People used wwwwwwww as a shortened version of lol. People then saw this looks like grass. So 草 is Japanese slang for lol. This is much, much different than what it means in the Chinese context. History lesson over.
