So you've been cheated onto the SingaporeCSS pirate ship as a co-organiser. In case you have not been briefed, our meetup, Talk.CSS, is known to be the most anyhowly run meet-up in Singapore (or so we say). But even anyhowly, also must have standards to maintain. Because you are now on this ship, it's probably a good idea for you to know what goes on behind the scenes.
- Confirm venue, do this at least 1 month in advance, otherwise you're treading precarious waters and may end up without a venue
- Confirm speakers, this can more anyhowly. Ideally, have 2 speakers. If cannot find speakers, make sure you have a talk in your back pocket. Other options include, panel discussion, random-themed editions, anything else you can think of
- Make sure the website is updated, refer to SingaporeCSS website wiki for more details
- Make sure Meetup.com link exists, this should be taken care of during the website update
- Craft random social media posts reminding people Talk.CSS is happening that month. Do it however you like
- Update the intro slides, if you want to use them
- Intro slides are vanilla HTML, CSS and JS
- Clone the repo with
git clone [email protected]:SingaporeCSS/talk.css.git
- Run
npm install
, which will install all dependencies to run the slides locally - Run
gulp
to start server - Image assets go into the img folder. All venue host logos exist in here, preferably in SVG format (convert yourself if you can't find, otherwise, bo bian use PNG lor)
- Styles are written in
styles.scss
, which exists in the scss folder, will be compiled by Gulp - Scripts are written in
custom.js
, which exists in the js folder, for now, we use Javascript for keyboard navigation on the slides, and for The Chris Script (trademark pending) - Slide content exists solely in
index.html
- Be sure to update the venue logo
- Choose a new CSS colour of the month, details on past colours available on the CSS colour tracker issue
- Update the agenda slide with the month's talk titles
- Add in any planned announcements
- Navigate slides via keyboard, space key or right arrow key to progress to next slide, left arrow key to move to previous slide
- Clicking the Back and Next anchor links at the bottom of the slide also works
- Currently buggy on mobile, troubleshooting WIP
- Show up around 630pm, because our standard start time is 7pm
- Be nice to the host so we can come back in future
- Double-check laptop setup with representative from Engineers.SG
- If you never met your speaker(s) before, maybe try to identify them in the crowd
- Start the meetup any time between 715pm and 730pm, depending on your mood
- Do the standard intro, choose your own style, it's your show and run it how you like. Use the intro slides, or not. It's up to you.
- If you are not Hui Jing, and don't want to do the HTML & CSS news updates, just point them to the text version (note: if somehow Hui Jing died or something and is not involved anymore, then you ownself see how lor)
- Regardless of your style, remember to thank all the peoples, because this meetup wouldn't be possible without them
- Engineers.SG will turn around the videos very fast, so you can update the website with the meetup recap in your own time, but ideally BEFORE the next one will be good. Refer to SingaporeCSS website wiki for more details
- Collect slide links (and any relevant links) from speakers, if available
- Prepare the newsletter and send it. Newsletter is essentially the HTML & CSS news plus the recap link and speakers' slides
- Do the social medias on Facebook and Twitter, if you want to, up to you
