Javascript IoT Explorer

This repository contains helpful information for installation and code examples for the NodeBots IoT session. There are some workshop slides that accompany this repository.

Objective

The objective of this session is to achieve the following:

  • Develop an understanding of the nodebots / johnny-five hardware stack.
  • Have a dev environment fully capable of running that stack.
  • Develop a network enabled device that can interact with a web service and actuate back in the real world.

Equipment

There is a kit available for $20 that has been designed for this session which includes:

  • 1x Arduino Uno clone (CH340g USB-serial board).
  • 1x USB cable
  • 1x LM355 or LM35 temperature sensor.
  • 1x mini breadboard
  • 10x jumper wires.
  • Standard Servo.
  • 1x RGB LED
  • 2x Red LED, 2x Blue LED, 2x Green LED, 2x White LED, 2x Yellow LED
  • 5x 220Ω, 5x 1KΩ 5x 10KΩ Resistors
  • 1x photoresistor
  • 1x 9g mini-servo
  • Kit box

Installation

Before the session ensure you install the following:

Clone this repo and install node dependencies:

git clone [email protected]:ajfisher/jsiot-explorer.git && cd jsiot-explorer
npm install

If you're on Mac or Windows, you'll need to install the drivers for the arduino board. They are in the drivers folder. On Mac you may get a prompt about opening up the CodeBender site at one point. You can safely ignore this, however in the future if you're interested in programming and managing devices from a browser, the CodeBender project is really interesting.

If you're on Linux, you don't need to do anything - the kernel drivers are already there if you're using any kernal from the last several years.

Installing software to the Arduino

You can use Interchange - which is like a package manager for arduino. Make sure ./node_modules/.bin is on your PATH so you can execute binaries locally. Then simply plug in the arduino and do the following:

interchange install StandardFirmata -a uno

Assuming no errors, you're ready to start getting your code working.

In this repository are several examples that compliment the workshop. There are three major areas:

Each of these folders contains sections underneath them specific to the example being used as illustrated below;

Within each example is a README file which will contain the steps you need to follow to replicate the example including the circuit diagram. From there you can then run the appropriate example code as indicated in the README
