Well Record Submissions

We are happy to announce the release of well record data submission in GWELLS!

This latest functionality brings the ability for industry to electronically submit well construction, alteration and decommission reports.

There are over 117,000 groundwater well records already available at https://apps.nrs.gov.bc.ca/gwells/ and this release means newly drilled wells will be added through the GWELLS website.

Users can also consume our JSON API at https://apps.nrs.gov.bc.ca/gwells/api/.

Aquifers Search and Summary

The latest functionality related to the GWELLS application is now available! You can now search and print a summary page of aquifer data and information.

What does this mean for you?
Easily search for aquifer data and information and get the most up-to-date information. Over time, documents or reports related to an aquifer will be added and will be accessible through the aquifer summary page – making it easier to find relevant information to an aquifer.

How do you get access?
To get access, simply go to the GWELLS Aquifer​ page and search for an aquifer using Aquifer Name or Aquifer Number.

What’s New?
Through consultation with the Aquifer Framework working group, program area staff, and users; certain fields are being retired to help standardize data collection and improve data quality and accuracy. Fields that are not included in GWELLS include:

• Aquifer Classification
• Ranking value
• Quantity concerns (data has been included within e-licensing application)
• Adjoining mapsheet

Secure document storage

The latest functionality related to the GWELLS application is now available. Secure document storage is now available to authorized staff.

Data Entry for Register of Well Drillers and Pump Installers

Authorized program area staff can now enter, update or view records related to the register of well drillers and well pump installers.

The register lists individuals who are authorized under the Water Sustainability Act (WSA) to work on a well in British Columbia. Registered well drillers and well pump installers are responsible for safe drilling practices and installation of pumps and other works. Requiring registered individuals to perform these activities minimizes the risk of polluting groundwater or drinking water from poorly constructed wells or works.

The Register of Well Drillers and Well Pump Installers data entry/view page is the latest release as part of the Groundwater Wells and Aquifers (GWELLS) application. GWELLS is being developed to support the WSA and Groundwater Protection Regulation (GWPR), improve business processes and decision making, and improve access to groundwater data and information.

This project is supported by the Water Information Services Project (WISP), which is a multi-year, business transformation initiative that aims to consolidate water data from multiple systems, accelerate and enable decision making processes, reduce administrative burden and support the WSA and economic development.

Register of Well Drillers and Well Pump Installers

We are delighted to announce the launch of GWELLS Document Storage and access to historical well records.

Historical well records can now be accessed through the GWELLS Well Summary page, which is accessible through the GWELLS Search page.

There are approximately 10,000 historical well records currently available and more will be accessible on a regular basis. This is of significant value to users as:

1. A scanning project of the historical well records has recently been completed.
2. It will help reduce staff time providing historical records to clients upon request.
3. It will increase access to groundwater data and information related to a well, which is a critical component in the adjudication process of a groundwater authorization.

Well Summary

We are delighted to announce the launch of the new GWELLS Well Summary page.

The Well Summary page is accessed through GWELLS Search and provides a streamlined and user –friendly summary of location (including a map), construction and decommission information related to a well.

The GWELLS application is being developed to replace the existing WELLS database and it will incorporate existing functionality found in WELLS and add new functionality to support the Water Sustainability Act (WSA) and Groundwater Protection Regulation (GWPR), improve business processes and decision making, and improve access to groundwater data and information.

The goals of the new GWELLS application are to:

• Simplify how users enter and submit well data to the provincial government
• Simplify how users access groundwater data and information through GWELLS and other government applications and systems
• Improve how aquifer data and information is captured, stored, and accessed
• Incorporate the register of well drillers and well pump installers

Search for Groundwater Wells in BC

Groundwater wells provide industry, municipalities, farms and homeowners with access to groundwater to meet domestic and non-domestic water needs. Groundwater wells must be constructed and maintained to ensure that the groundwater supply is safe from pollution, and the possibility of wasted water is minimized.
