Overview

What is an application that answers the question, “What is it you say you do around here?”

What is an application which isn’t much more than a big textarea for entering in what it is that you are currently working on.

What helps keep track of what you are working on, so preparing a weekly status report or an invoice can be quick and easy.

Detail

When What starts up, it always loads $HOME/.doing into the textarea, and adds a time stamp. So an initial run might look like this,

  03:41PM

You then usually supply a brief description of what you are doing,

  03:41PM Editing _what_ wiki home page to have some basic description of what _what_ does.

To save type Control-S which also closes the application. I run the application out of cron every 30 minutes. Every two weeks I create an invoice and I include this detail along with my invoice. For building the invoice, there is also the Tally menu item.

The Tally menu item adds up and generate a line item for an invoice, for example;

    Monday, September 15
     07:00AM coffed
     09:00AM coded flim flam sorting
     03:30PM scoot
     s: flim flam sorting

from this set of 5 lines, tally would show a single line “Monday, September 15 TAB 8 TAB flim flam sorting” This single line is tuned for insertion into an invoice. The “s:XXX” part is an optional summary for the day. I usually review each day and create a synopsis when I’m preparing to generate an invoice.
