About the department Wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung (scientific data processing) WDV

The collection mandate of the DLA gives rise to a special responsibility for the preservation of unique digital works which, as »born digitals«, can not be reproduced in principle and can not be acquired redundantly or cooperatively developed.

Thomas Strittmatter’s remain was the first with digital components in 2000. The DLA has developed a workflow for the preservation and development of digital estate objects, which is well applicable to static, textual material with manageable size. The recent addition of full authoring PCs, however, shows that the method developed on manageable floppy disks does not scale for large volumes of data.

This is exemplified by the estate of the media and literary scholar Friedrich Kittler (1943-2011): 756 replicated data media (floppy disks, CD-Rs, but also nine hard disks) already exceed the scope of the entire digital archive of more than 10 years; a simple selection out of around 1.7 million original files is not possible. For this purpose, innovative software tools were and still are developed for the automatic analysis of large, unstructured data volumes, which make the selection and development of relevant files possible in the first place. One of these tools is the Indexer software.
