INTRODUCTION all pages are drafts at the moment
Welcome to the manual pages of the new indexer-software. The individual chapters are currently being processed, but in the near future they will be filled with relevant information about the indexer-ng (next-generation).
All chapters of the manual can be found on the right side in the “pages” drop-down menu. After finishing all work, they should be displayed in a clear sidebar on the right side.
The German Literature Archive (DLA) in Friedrich Schiller’s birthplace Marbach am Neckar was founded on 12 July 1955 and renamed in April 2005 in Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach. Its financier is the association German Schiller Society e.V. The archive is the largest German literature archive in a free sponsorship. It is a member of the Southwest German Library Network. The collection mandate of the DLA gives rise to a special responsibility for the preservation of unique digital works which, as »born digitals«, can not be reproduced in principle and can not be acquired redundantly or cooperatively developed.
Thomas Strittmatter’s remain was the first with digital components in 2000. The DLA has developed a workflow for the preservation and development of digital estate objects, which is well applicable to static, textual material with manageable size. The recent addition of full authoring PCs, however, shows that the method developed on manageable floppy disks does not scale for large volumes of data.
This is exemplified by the estate of the media and literary scholar Friedrich Kittler (1943-2011): 756 replicated data media (floppy disks, CD-Rs, but also nine hard disks) already exceed the scope of the entire digital archive of more than 10 years; a simple selection out of around 1.7 million original files is not possible. For this purpose, innovative software tools were and still are developed for the automatic analysis of large, unstructured data volumes, which make the selection and development of relevant files possible in the first place. One of these tools is the Indexer software.
