DSD is my attempt at building a UNIX-clone toy operating system by following a tutorial by James Molloy. James’ tutorial can be found online at:
http://www.jamesmolloy.co.uk/tutorial_html/index.html
DSD uses Grub for a bootloader, and can currently run on top of Bochs (IA-32).
The first time you check out DSD, you will need to rename the scripts/floppy-sample.img file to just scripts/floppy.img
cp scripts/floppy-sample.img scripts/floppy.img
Now, to build DSD, we will need to compile the DSD kernel:
cd build make clean make
Now we must create the default DSD mount point, /mnt/dsd
sudo mkdir /mnt/dsd
Next, we will move the DSD kernel to the bootable floppy.img disk image.
./update_image.sh
The disk image already has Grub configured to boot the DSD kernel. Now we are ready to start Bochs:
./run_bochs.sh
Pretty anticlimactic, I know… More excitement is soon to come!
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64 for my development environment.
sudo apt-get install nasm sudo apt-get install bochs bochs-x
I made a brief attempt to build DSD on Mac OS X, but ran into trouble with OS X’s version of the BSD Linker.
