ImageJ is an open source image analysis software developed by the National Insitute of Health (NIH). FossilJ is a newly designed palaeontological plugin which improves efficiency, reproducibility, and eliminates individual bias within body size measurement data for bivalves. The plugin semi-automatically collects data on width, height, preservation, valve chirality (left or right), and drillhole presence/absence and diameter, from user provided images. This can be undertaken as a batch process with multiple specimens per image and sequential images of varying magnification levels. In addition to to csv format output, FossilJ produces unique specimen references on measurement validation images alongside drawn and labelled drillholes, valve chirality and background cleaned images.
Installation and requirements are described here.
A note to all: FossilJ is still in active development and may still contain some bugs. If you have any questions or would like to report any malfunctioning, just let us know!
FossilJ was developed and tested Windows 10 using Fiji. To install FossilJ, copy the contents of [FossiJ folder] (link here) to your ImageJ/plugins directory the refresh ImageJ's plugins with Help->Refresh Menus.
Many thanks to P. Albano and K. de Baets for providing the material for testing this software.
