If you think you have found an EVE that has not been reported, or has been reported with a non-standard name, you may add it to the catalog.
You will need to know:
- to know the taxonomic group to which the EVE belongs, at least to family level, and ideally to as fine a level as possible - e.g. virus genus
- most eves the most likely family or origin will be known (as EVEs are usually identified based on their similarity to known viruses.
- for unclassifiable EVEs identified via other means (e.g. Tomonaga paper)
- classification based on genome type (if known) e.g. RNA negative
4 the EVE type - for most EVEs, this will be defined based on the taxonomy. However for EVEs derived from -ve sense RNA viruses that convention is based on the taxonomy AND the gene
- if you are aware of the EVE being present as an ortholog in one or more genomes
- which species genomes?
- evidence quality?
If you have this information you have most of what you need to name the EVE:
First check the file 'namespace.tsv'
This file is compiled from data on this directory and provides all the unique EVE locus names
