Protoparvovirus Extension Data
Protoparvoviruses are a genus of small, non-enveloped viruses in the Parvoviridae family that primarily infect mammals. The genus includes important veterinary pathogens as well as viruses that are being explored for therapeutic applications.
Notable pathogens in this group include canine parvovirus (CPV) responsible for severe gastrointestinal illness in dogs, especially puppies, and feline panleukopenia virus (FPV): a related virus that causes disease in cats, characterized by a depletion of white blood cells and severe gastrointestinal symptoms.
Rodent protoparvoviruses - such as minute virus of mice (MVM) and H-1 parvovirus - are being investigated as oncolytic viruses for treating cancer. These viruses selectively replicate in tumor cells and cause cell lysis, potentially leading to tumor regression.
Tabular data summarising protoparvovirus species reference sequences can be found here.
Multiple sequence alignments (MSAs) spanning complete protoparvovirus genomes can be found here.
