Reading

Reading

  • show current paragraph (e.g. abstract) and hide/shade rest of the text -> for better concentration [picture: participant#1 (3)]

  • select current paragraph by clicking on corresponding title (titles are highlighted to see what is selectable)

  • uses portrait format to read text arranged in columns [picture: participant#1 (2)]

  • uses landscape format to read text not arranged in columns

Highlighting

  • uses thumb to highlight more than one line

  • OR: touches first word of the text to be highlighted -> cursor appears -> drags cursor to last word of text to be selected (smartphone technique)

  • OR: uses stylus to highlight text line by line

  • uses highlighting to mark one word (uses more than one color normally)

Underlining

  • uses underlining to mark sentences
  • prefers stylus to underline text line by line

Making Comments

  • clicks next to underlined/highlighted text part -> menu pops up -> selects function to comment -> sticky note appears [picture: participant#1 (10)]
  • sticky note should be movable, resizable and hideable (if not in use)
  • option to choose between stylus or keyboard

Erasing

  • clicks on note -> menu pops up -> function to delete complete annotation
  • OR: uses stylus as an eraser [picture: participant#1 (6)]

Searching

  • clicks on word which he wants to search -> menu pops up -> display highlights all words in screen space [picture: participant#1 (13)]
  • use halo to show words outside the screen space
  • page numbers are shown on bottom of device to inform user about search result on other pages

Find annotated content

  • uses halo technique
  • would like to have search within annotations
  • search by color/type/...

Related content

  • clicks on image -> video starts (while the device is lifted up, the video is still shown)
  • click on references (such as images) -> window with corresponding graphic appears on device

Navigation

  • uses book for navigation (easier than device)

Flipping

  • to change between working space and shortcuts (such as calculator, browser, weather forecast)
  • but he would prefer to switch by button

Stacking

  • doesn't like the idea -> device is more personal -> doesn't want to use another one's device
  • to compare two graphics (data matching)

Tilting

  • to take pictures

  • click on word to show meaning, translation, synonyms
  • small bookmarks as reminder of annotations on other pages (bookmarks are always visible)
  • set an anchor in a book page to a picture -> other users can see this anchor when using the same book
  • use for sketching
