curl -o /tmp/gcm-release https://api.github.com/repos/git-ecosystem/git-credential-manager/releases/latest
gcm_link=$(sed -n 's/^[[:blank:]]*"browser_download_url": \("https.*.deb"\)$/\1/p' /tmp/gcm-release)
# returns e.g."https://github.com/git-ecosystem/git-credential-manager/releases/download/v2.6.0/gcm-linux_amd64.2.6.0.deb"

start of new install

echo ".conf.git/" >> .gitignore
alias conf='git --git-dir="$HOME/.conf.git/" --work-tree=$HOME'
conf clone https://
