Import GEDCOM with media files

You have a GEDCOM file with a bunch of media files, and you want to import everything in Family Gem.
Well, that’s possible!

First, import the GEDCOM

If you open your GEDCOM file (e.g. myAncestry.ged) with a text editor, probably you will find lines like this:

FILE C:\Users\Marge\Documents\images\Homer Simpson.jpg

That's a path in the Windows file system and obviously has no meaning in Android.
But there is no need to replace it with any Android path.
The important part is only Homer Simpson.jpg, and Family Gem knows it!

To import your GEDCOM file full of Windows/Mac/Linux FILE paths, follow these steps:

  1. Take myAncestry.ged as it is (no need to replace any path).
  2. Upload it into the folder you prefer on the Android device, e.g. Documents.
Alternatively you can upload it on your Google Drive.
  3. In Family Gem go to TreesImport a GEDCOM file and find myAncestry.ged.
  4. The myAncestry tree will appear in the Trees list.

Then, link the media folder

After imported the GEDCOM, you can link one or more folders that contain the media files:

  1. Upload your media files into any folder you prefer of Android, e.g. Pictures/of/my/ancestry/Homer Simpson.jpg.
  2. In Family Gem go to Trees menu → Media folders.
  3. Tap → Select the media folder and allow access to it.
  4. The folder name and path will appear on the list.
  5. Just open your tree and voilà, images.
