docs/index_pdf.rst is used. It is used to build the pdf version of the documentation without the matlab reference, etc. It is not build on readthedocs as it cannot build within the time limit of 10 min. We build it locally for new releases only.

I removed index_pdf.html from the reference testing so it doesn't fail the tests.
