This involves a couple of changes: 1. Read from /etc/machine-info, and if not, return the nodename. This logic works on all non-macOS Unixes, including illumos. 2. On illumos, read the nodename from uname(2) rather than /etc/nodename. I confirmed with an illumos core dev that the two should have the same content.
Per special request from the illumos core dev. "illumos" is always written in lowercase, because many fonts don't clearly distinguish between "I" and "l" [1]. [1] https://github.com/TritonDataCenter/smartos-live/pull/217/files#r38812501
