# Downbeat

The **downbeat** is the first beat of a bar in measured music. It can be seen on the [beatmap editor](/wiki/Beatmap_Editor/) timeline as big white ticks. Its name is derived from the downward stroke of the director or conductor's baton on the first beat of each measure. It usually carries the strongest accent of the rhythmic cycle.

# iNiS games

The [osu!standard](/wiki/Game_Modes/osu!) [game mode](/wiki/Game_Modes) and osu! itself were originally based on rhythm games developed by **[iNiS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/INiS "iNiS on Wikipedia")** for the [Nintendo DS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS "Nintendo DS on Wikipedia") in the early 2000s. ![][flag_AU] [peppy](https://osu.ppy.sh/users/2) built osu! to be a simulator and level editor for the iNiS games, and the earliest community members were generally fans of them too. Older [beatmaps](/wiki/Beatmaps) were heavily influenced by iNiS level design.

The games referred to are:

- [Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osu!_Tatakae!_Ouendan "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan on Wikipedia") (*Ouendan*)
- [Elite Beat Agents](#elite-beat-agents) (*EBA*)
- [Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! 2](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moero!_Nekketsu_Rhythm_Damashii_Osu!_Tatakae!_Ouendan_2 "Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2 on Wikipedia") (*Ouendan 2*)

## Elite Beat Agents

![](img/Elite-Beat-Agents.jpg "Box art for Elite Beat Agents")

***[Elite Beat Agents](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_Beat_Agents "Elite Beat Agents on Wikipedia")*** is a western sequel to *Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!* released in 2006. Some of its characters were present as osu! mascots in official artwork and skins.

<!--TODO: Insert lots of links and sections for Ouendan games, talk about which game mechanics are old and new -->
