## Using Distance Snap

Distance Snap is just a **tool** to maintain proportional distance between two hit-objects, a "crutch" if you will. It works well in most situations but over-reliance will make your difficulty predictable and with limited working space. While it is not wrong to use Distance Snap, remember that it is just a tool intended to suit the mapper's purpose. A change in distance should make sense and follow to the rhythm well. Distance Snap is just a helper and does not constitute a professional advice, that would be in the [beatmap forum](https://osu.ppy.sh/community/forums/56) if you need one.

# Downbeat

The **downbeat** is the first beat of a bar in measured music. Its name is derived from the downward stroke of the director or conductor's baton on the first beat of each measure. It usually carries the strongest accent of the rhythmic cycle.

# iNiS games

The [osu!standard](/wiki/Game_Modes/osu!) [game mode](/wiki/Game_Modes) and osu! itself were originally based on rhythm games developed by **[iNiS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/INiS "iNiS on Wikipedia")** for the [Nintendo DS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS "Nintendo DS on Wikipedia") in the early 2000s. ![][flag_AU] [peppy](https://osu.ppy.sh/users/2) built osu! to be a simulator and level editor for the iNiS games, and the earliest community members were generally fans of them too. Older [beatmap](/wiki/Beatmaps) design was heavily influenced by the style of iNiS gameplay.
