Code of Conduct
This page is the Code of Conduct for the Sandstorm SF Bay Area Meetup. It's based (heavily!) on the Rust Code of Conduct.
Feedback on this code of conduct is extremely welcome; please send to [email protected].
If people are generally happy with this, we can consider declaring it official for the Sandstorm IRC channel and perhaps the whole Sandstorm community.
In merely the past five years, I (Asheesh) can think of two instances where my behavior violated a code of conduct. In 2012, I demeaned someone's work at an Ubuntu conference (without realizing that's what I was doing), resulting in them being disincentivized to participate. In 2014, I complained about a potential contributor's work on an IRC channel without being specific in my complaints, resulting in other people feeling that their work was likely to be attacked without any way they could address the issues being raised. In both cases, people took me aside, talked to me about the incidents, referred to the group's code of conduct, and helped me see that my actions were not productive for the community's growth.
In both cases, I was not intentionally cruel, yet my actions made people feel unwelcome in a community that I cared about. The fact that other people had a way to tell me precisely what I did wrong made it easy for me see my mistakes, apologize, and have everyone move on.
Email [email protected] if you have more questions.
- We are committed to providing a friendly, safe and welcoming environment for all, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, religion, or similar personal characteristic.
- On IRC, please avoid using overtly sexual nicknames or other nicknames that might detract from a friendly, safe and welcoming environment for all.
- Please be kind and courteous. There's no need to be mean or rude.
- Respect that people have differences of opinion and that every design or implementation choice carries a trade-off and numerous costs. There is seldom a right answer.
- Please keep unstructured critique to a minimum. If you have solid ideas you want to experiment with, make a fork and see how it works.
- We will exclude you from interaction if you insult, demean or harass anyone. That is not welcome behaviour. We interpret the term "harassment" as including the definition in the Citizen Code of Conduct; if you have any lack of clarity about what might be included in that concept, please read their definition. In particular, we don't tolerate behavior that excludes people in socially marginalized groups.
- Private harassment is also unacceptable. No matter who you are, if you feel you have been or are being harassed or made uncomfortable by a community member, please contact one of the channel ops or any of the Sandstorm core team immediately. Whether you're a regular contributor or a newcomer, we care about making this community a safe place for you and we've got your back.
- Likewise any spamming, trolling, flaming, baiting or other attention-stealing behavior is not welcome.
