EVPN serves as a control plane protocol for MAC address dissemination among routers, offering a scalable and efficient solution.
VxLAN is a datapath encapsulation, addresses the scalability issues of conventional VLANs by encapsulating Ethernet frames within UDP packets.
Together, EVPN and VxLAN facilitate the encapsulation of Layer 2 and Layer 3 traffic over an underlying IP network.
While EVPN originally emerged as a Layer 2 VPN technology to overcome VPLS limitations, it has since evolved to support other applications, like Layer 3 VPN services.

This tutorial will lead you through configuring the DC fabric underlay. It will then cover the creation of an L3 EVPN overlay across two routers functioning as a unified virtual router. In the final chapter, it details how to peer the client with the EVPN overlay for route exchange.
We have covered the basics of Layer 2 EVPN in the [Layer 2 EVPN Basics Tutorial][evpn-basics-tutorial] where we discussed how to configure EVPN to provide a layer 2 service across an IP fabric.
Today' focus will be on deploying a **Layer 3 Ethernet VPN (EVPN)** in the SR Linux-powered DC fabric.
As you might expect, the Layer 3 EVPN is designed to provide Layer 3 services across the fabric. As such, there are **no** stretched broadcast domains across the fabric and the customer equipment is typically running a BGP PE-CE session with the top of rack switch to exchange IP prefixes.

Our lab setup will resemble the following configuration: it will feature two Leaf devices linked to a Spine, collectively referred to as the DC Fabric. Attached to each Leaf, there will be a client that also functions as a CE router, capable of communicating routing protocols with the fabric. We will employ FRR for this task. To explain the Layer 3 EVPN configuration and concepts we will use a small fabric with two leafs, one spine and two clients connected to the leafs. The clients will run FRRouting software as a CE router.

Service-wise, and in contrast to the Layer 2 EVPN, the CE devices will establish a BGP session with the leaf devices to exchange IP prefixes and the Layer 3 EVPN service will make sure that the client prefixes are reachable across the fabric.
