This limits the places where to place them, they need to be closed to a wall socket and preferably hide the cable behind some curtains or closet to make it look nice.
Other stars are battery powered but the button to turn them on is inside the star itself. Not easy to reach when it hangs on the ceiling!

The **plug powered lights** are easy to automate.
Plug them into a good old-fashioned timers, everybody had already automated it in the previous century like in Home Alone! Every day on exact the same time.

I have Christmas paper stars that contain a regular light bulb.
This reduces the positions where I could place them,
they must be in reach of a power socket and somewhere where I could keep the power cable out of sight, guide them behind a curtain or so.

I solved this by using battery powered LED lights, which are controllable via an infrared remote.
I used a Zigbee programmable infrared receiver and transmitter which can learn from the original remote.
This transmitter is a Zigbee, battery powered, device that can be placed in the sight of multiple stars.
I have it at a distance of five meters and still works great as long as your star is made of thin carton/paper.

#### The programmable infrared remote

I used the [Moes UFO-R11](https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/devices/UFO-R11.html){{imgZ2M}}, a battery powered (wireless) Zigbee programmable infared receiver and transmitter to replace the original LED light remote.\
This device can store multiple different signals.

Learn mode:

To learn a new signal, set the device in learning mode by sending this payload to the MQTT topic of the device, for it that `zigbee2mqtt/irremote/set`

Now a light turned on in front of the device.
Now you can hold the original remote in front of the device and press a single button.

The response contains the infrared code to use to resend the signal via this device now.

## Upcoming projects

For this year I have an additional project I will work on.
I have these paper stars that contains a regular light bulb.
This reduces the positions where I can place them, they must now be in reach of a power socket.
Also you see the cable. With this project, I want to improve this.

Here are already the details of this project:
I will use wireless (battery powered) lights, with different colors and brightness AND controllable by an infrared remote.
I want to put the lights in a paper star and use a Zigbee IR remote control to replace the original remote so this can be automated.
If you have created already a similar project I like to hear your experience!
