Alternative Title
Many games have a variety of names, including regional titles, acronyms, former working titles, and other nicknames. Documenting multiple names for a particular game in the database assists us in preventing duplicates and improves our search!
Languages: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish titles. ℹ️ Chinese titles have 2 options: simplified and traditional
- European title
- Japanese title - Original
- Korean title - Original
The three titles listed above have been relocated to the Localization tab. These alternatives will no longer be available in the Alternative Titles menu. We strongly encourage you to continue adding these original titles via Localization.
Please keep in mind that the IGDB's standards for Japanese/Korean originals differ from the stylized version of the same title.
Take a look at our guidelines for localized data here.
Read more about Japanese games and spelling here.
You can still find alternative titles that do not adhere to the ISO standard here.

Alternative spelling is a title of the game that's too similar to be classified as an alternative title. Sometimes game names don't fall under our guidelines for titles and those can also be added here.
- Rock of Ages 3: Make & Break has Rock of Ages III: Make & Break as an alternative spelling.
- KARDS - The WWII Card Game is added as an alternative spelling as we want to follow our guidelines and go by KARDS: The WWII Card Game as the original title.
A game can have a multitude of titles, a change that's different enough not to be an alternative spelling.
- Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal has Ratchet & Clank 3 as an alternative title.
At IGDB we use the North American English title as the main name. Sometimes (and mostly for older games) titles can be different in Europe.
- X-COM: UFO Defense was called UFO: Enemy Unknown in Europe.
We are currently working on changing our guidelines around game titles in order to make the data more consistent and easy to read. A Stylized title is any title (often original) that is represented in a non-naturalistic conventional form. This could mean a title that's IN ALL CAPS, a title that includes emoticons 😃 or other unusual characters such as ~, ・ or ☆. If a game has such a title that does not follow IGDB's guidelines, please put the title in the 'Alternative names' section with the label 'Stylized title".
Examples:
-
Final Fantasy II: Pixel Remaster Stylized title: FINAL FANTASY II: PiXEL REMASTER
-
Magnesium 173 Stylized title: Magnesium_173
-
Hiiro no Kakera Aizouban: Akane Iro no Tsuioku Stylized title: Hiiro no Kakera Aizouban ~ Akane Iro no Tsuioku ~
Exceptions
Abbreviations will always be in capitalized letters, such as DX, HD, US, PUBG, etc. However, VS (versus) will be standardized as “vs.” in our titles at IGDB.
Example:
Title according to guidelines: SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos
Note: We are aware that we currently have titles in the database that goes against these rules. This is a work in progress that will be implemented in phases. Please stay tuned for updates.
A working title, sometimes called a production title or a tentative title, is the temporary title of a product or project used during its development.
- DRAGON BALL Z: KAKAROT was only known as Project Z throughout most of its public development.
