Releases: BazzaCuda/MinimalistMediaPlayerX
Release v2.2.3
Windows 64-bit binaries.
EDIT: full.zip has been updated to include two files required for autoUpdate=yes, namely libeay32.dll and ssleay32.dll. I had expected these files to be included in Windows 10 and Windows 11 as standard. Apparently not. This should now fix auto-updates as well as making the "What's New?" button in the About Box (Ctrl-[A]) operational. Please note that, despite their names, these are 64-bit binaries.
NEW
- In the audo/video editor (Ctrl-[E]) there is now a Help tab with a handy list of all the editor keyboard controls.
- This list can be scrolled either with the scroll bars or, more conveniently, with the mouse wheel.
FIXES
- fixed a problem in the Release Notes window (click the What's New? button in the About Box) where images in the release notes didn't always display.
- this requires
autoUpdate=yes
in the MinimalistMediaPlayer.conf file.
Asset files
The "...full.zip" release file below contains everything you need to run Minimalist Media Player:
- MinimalistMediaPlayer.exe
- MediaInfo.dll
- libmpv-2.dll
- ffmpeg.exe
- rot.exe
Alternatively, if you already have these from a previous release, you can just download the program update:
MinimalistMediaPlayer_v2_2_3.zip
(I strongly recommend that you do not download this file from any source other than Github)
All comments and suggestions for additional functionality or to highlight operational issues will be well received over on the Discussions page.
Thanks for taking an interest in Minimalist Media Player!
Release v2.2.2
Windows 64-bit binaries.
NEW: auto-updates
- if you have
autoUpdate=yes
in yourMinimalistMediaPlayer.conf
file, when you open the About Box (ctrl-[A]), MMP will check for a new release and download the latest "...full.zip" file if you don't already have it. - The version you are currently running will be backed-up/renamed to "MinimalistMediaPlayer vN_N_N.exe", named after its version.
- If this rename is successful, MMP will extract MinimalistMediaPlayer.exe from the zip file.
- The About Box will report that a restart is required.
Note: I do not know how this will behave on Windows installations which have User Access Control (UAC) set on (UAC has been turned off on all my Windows systems almost from the time it was first introduced). This is especially true if you have installed MMP to "Program Files", or somewhere equally delicate from Windows' point of view.
I am relying on my MMP users to notify me of any problems with the auto-update mechanism. It is a very straight-forward process, but Microsoft Windows has a very long and notorious reputation in IT development departments for getting in the way of the straight-forward :P. Please feel free to give me feedback over at the Discussions page. You can, of course, manually extract the .exe from the zip file if the auto-update process fails to do it.
Note: the auto-update process doesn't yet update the other files (e.g. the DLLs) in the zip file. As these files rarely change, this shouldn't be a problem. This will be implemented following feedback on how your Windows systems deal with just the .exe update - thanks in advance!
NEW
-
[ENTER] and NumPad [ENTER] play the next media file. These can now be held down, ostensibly to rapidly flip through multiple images.
-
Ctrl-[ENTER] and Ctrl-NumPad [ENTER] do the opposite - play the previous media file - and can be held down for rapid repitition.
-
The release notes for the latest version can be viewed by clicking the new "What's New?" button in the About Box.
-
You must specify
autoUpdate=yes
in MinimalistMediaPlayer.conf -
The release notes for a release are downloaded [once] from Github and stored in a "releaseNotes" subfolder of your MMP installation.
-
Any screenshots included in the release notes will also be downloaded once only.
-
Links in the release notes can be clicked to open them in your browser. E.g...
- Both the About Box and the Release Notes windows can be closed with the [ESC]ape key.
MinimalistMediaPlayer_v2_2_2.zip
(I strongly recommend that you do not download this file from any source other than Github)
All comments and suggestions for additional functionality or to highlight operational issues will be well received over on the Discussions page.

Release v2.2.1
Windows 64-bit binaries.
NEW
- added support for .AVIF image files. Any such files in the current folder will be added to the playlist automatically. They will be included in the slideshow if you have set an
image-display-duration=
value in mpv.conf.
FIXES
- tweak to minimalistmediaplayer.conf: the brightness values are now stored as hexidecimal RGB values.
- tweak to prevent the brightness values for captions being increased or decreased to out-of-bounds values.
- fixed the main caption at the top of the window not reacting to Brighter (ctrl-[B]) and Darker (ctrl-shift-[B]) commands.
- the
mmp-install.bat
file was omitted inadvertently from the previous release's zip files.
TIP
- if you have .AVIF image files and you would prefer them to be e.g. .JPG, you can convert them individually from the command line using the enclosed FFMPEG.EXE
ffmpeg -i "myfile.avif" "myfile.jpg"
- alternatively, you can use my ffmpegparams app (https://github.com/BazzaCuda/ffmpegparams) to bulk-convert many files in seconds
- simply drag and drop an entire list of files from your file explorer to "Input Files"
- clear the "Output Switches" box
- set the "Output File Extension" to .jpg
- Click Go!
- note that ffmpegparams expects to find FFMPEG.EXE in your system path (or install ffmpegparams.exe to the same folder as ffmpeg.exe)
- you can also, of course, convert all your .JPGs to .AVIFs, if you wish using the same technique.

Release v2.2.0
Windows 64-bit binaries.
NEW
- the latest release can now be downloaded automatically.
simply edit your MinimalistMediaPlayer.conf file and include the line
autoUpdate=yes
Then, in MMP, press Ctrl-[A] to open the [A]bout Box. MMP will connect to GitHub to find out the latest release version. If you are not running the latest version, MMP will download the latest "full.zip" file [if it doesn't already exist] and then display the About Box:
Currently, you will need to manually extract MinimalistMediaPlayer.exe from the .zip file to replace your existing .exe - automatic installation will come in a future release.
N.B. MMP will only ever connect to the internet when autoUpdates=yes and you open the [A]bout Box.
NEW
-
[F10], [F11] and [F12] can be used to open the current media file in another app.
These keys default to opening PotPlayer, LossLessCut and ShotCut, respectively.
All three can now be overridden in your minimalistmediaplayer.conf file, e.g.
F10=<full path to .exe>MMP now provides very useful editing capabilities. Consequently, like me, you might now have limited use for having [F11] open a video file in LossLessCut. If so, you might decide to reprogram F11, for example, so you can open an image file in your favorite image editing software.

Release v2.1.1
Windows 64-bit binaries.
- Fixed an issue where, if you paused the image slideshow, you couldn't then press [W] to display (aka [W]atch) the next image. This bug was introduced inadvertently when fixing a previous "pause slideshow" issue.
- Another minor tweak to the auto-sizing mechanism which will mostly affect switching between various tall, narrow, TikTok-type videos.
- Added support for animated GIFs. You can use Ctrl-[R] to set infinite auto-[R]epeat on GIFs.
Each release now includes an "install" folder containing "mmp-install.bat" which will associate Minimalist Media Player with all the audio and video file extensions that it supports. This has been adapted from the same batch file that ships with MPV itself. This batch file must be run from a subfolder of MinimalistMediaPlayer.exe's location.
You can edit the batch file to remove any file extensions you don't want associated with MMP. I recommend commenting out any such lines with a double colon :: in case you change your mind in the future.
It doesn't associate any image file extensions as I have assumed that, like me, you have a preferred app for managing your images.
You can, of course, manually associate your image file extensions with MMP if you wish, and you can always right-click any supported image file in your file manager/explorer app and select "Open with..." / "Minimalist Media Player".
Image files will still always be automatically added to the current folder's playlist.
"mmp-uninstall.bat" will remove all assocations with Minimalist Media Player.
N.B. Occasionally, you will find that Windows keeps a previous assocation between a media file extension and Windows Media Player. I have been unable to find a fix for this that I can include in the batch file. However, as MMP will now be a registered program, the association with Windows Media Player is easily fixed by going to the Windows Settings / Default Apps and selecting "Minimalist Media Player"...
...clicking on the required extension (in this case .aac)...
...and selecting MMP from the supplied list.
When the batch file has finished, you have the option of opening up Windows Settings / Default Apps. If you don't want to, simply close the window.

Release v2.1.0
Windows 64-bit binaries.
A minor but important update.
The command line operations to export and join edited segments will fail if the full path of the file being edited contains a single quote or an ampersand. This is because the character makes the syntax of the command line invalid.
This could be corrected manually after editing by renaming the media file to be edited and its corresponding .mmp file and then repeating the export, but it's a pain.
Following this update, when you press Ctrl-[E] to open the editing timeline, MMP will check the validity of the path/filename to be edited and will not show the timeline editor if either of the above characters is present. This allows you to rename the file first before proceeding with your editing, saving you the hassle of having to clean-up after the command line operation inevitably fails.
I'm not aware of any other characters which would cause a problem - let me know if you do discover one and I will add it to the validation check.

Release v2.0.9
EDIT: UPDATED TO REMOVE THE ZIP PASSWORD!!
Windows 64-bit binaries.
- updated the Ctrl-[H]elp panel with the new function keys, F6, F7, F8 and F9 (see release v2.0.8)
- Ctrl-[E] Audio/Video Editor: fixed [possibly] the minor issues with the Ctrl-[Z] undo and Ctrl-[Y] redo stacks - let me know!
- Ctrl-[E] Audio/Video Editor: removed the restrictions on, and simplied the use and creation of, [I]n and [O]ut points.
In and Out Points
Before performing any other edits, if you consider a media file as just one long segment, creating an IN point at the cursor requires splitting this one segment into two, with the resultant left segment marked as deleted. Conversely, an OUT point is exactly the same but with the resultant right segment marked as deleted.
MMP has been modified, and simplified, so that you can use the [I]n and [O]ut functions on any segment under the cursor, regardless of whether the segment is one overall segment for the entire media file, or a segment covering only a portion of the media file. As such, creating an [I]n point splits the segment under the cursor into two segments, marking the left segment as deleted; creating an [O]ut point splits the segment under the cursor into two segments, marking the right segment as deleted.
This saves the user from having to remember when it was permissible to use the [I] and [O] functions.
Following this amendment, [I] and Ctrl-[C] now do the same thing.
[I] and [O] can be used both on included and previously e[X]cluded segments.
The beauty of this change is that you can now TAB through an entire media file (audio or video) setting [I]n and [O]ut points as you go, to define the segments of the media file to be included in the final edit.

Release v2.0.8
Windows 64-bit binaries.
NEW
- [F6] cycle through all the audio tracks in the media file, one at a time
- [F7] cycle through all the subtitle tracks in the media file, one at a time
- [F8] skip to the previous chapter, if there is one
- [F9] skip to the next chapter, if there is one
N.B.
The [F6] cycle includes an "audio off" state.
The [F7] cycle includes a "subtitles off" state.
Chapters
[F8] and [F9] require that chapter metadata has been included in the media file.
If a chapter has a title, the title will be displayed when the chapter starts playing.
If you are more than about 5 seconds into a chapter, [F8] will skip to the start of the current chapter, and a subsequent [F8] will skip to the previous chapter. You can modify this by setting "--chapter-seek-threshold=seconds" in your mpv.conf file.
If chapter metadata is present, pressing [F8] or [F9] will briefly display an on-screen graphical representation of all the chapters and their respective lengths in relation to each other and in relation to the overall length of the video. The current playback position will be indicated by block-filling each chapter segment in the graphic (not shown):

Windows 64-bit binaries.
NEW
- [F5] screenshots, both for images and videos, now take account of whether you have zoomed-in or zoomed-out, or whether you have panned left, right, up or down.
- as a result, any adjustment you now make to the displayed video or image (brightness, contrast, gamma, saturation, rotation, zoom in/out, pan left/right/up/down) will be reflected in the screenshot.

Release v2.0.6
Windows 64-bit binaries.
Fix
- the [Spacebar] now pauses a slideshow on the image currently being displayed.
- previously, it firstly displayed the next image and then paused the slideshow.
- slideshows require that you have set "image-display-duration=" in mpv.conf to a specific number of seconds for each image.
